[ty] Recursive protocols (#17929) 
## Summary

Use a self-reference "marker" ~~and fixpoint iteration~~ to solve the
stack overflow problems with recursive protocols. This is not pretty and
somewhat tedious, but seems to work fine. Much better than all my
fixpoint-iteration attempts anyway.

Markdown files within the mdtest/ subdirectory are tests of type inference and type checking; executed by the tests/mdtest.rs integration test.
